MAGRIN700 storage batteries can generate electricity from salt water for use in an emergency
MAGRIN700 is a storage battery we developed that can generate electricity from salt water for use in an emergency. We had completed up to the prototype stage, but a Monozukuri subsidy allowed us to bring the manufacturing process completely in-house, and we were able to start mass production in May 2021. The background to this development is that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has issued a guideline that it is essential to supply local power to disaster victims for 72 hours until power is restored, to protect them from confusion and danger during a disaster. There is no charger or accumulator that can meet this requirement. Power generation for 72 hours is possible with lithium, but it is expensive to try to achieve. Magnesium is inexpensive but vulnerable to voltage and load fluctuations. Our MAGRIN700 uses lithium at the start when voltage current is applied, and when the lithium level runs low, salt water is pumped up and into magnesium cells. Electricity generated from the magnesium is charged into the lithium cell and then output from the lithium cell. This allows the system to cope with load fluctuations by continuously charging the magnesium to the lithium battery at a constant voltage. The total cost is 970,000 yen.
