What is Akashi Goyomatsu?
A thorough description of the Akashi Goyomatsu bonsai brand
Since ancient times, Akashi Goyomatsu has grown naturally in the Akashi Mountains, centering around Mt. Higashi Akashi (1,706 m), in Doi-machi, Shikoku Chuo City, Ehime Prefecture. On December 4, 1957, the tree was designated as a natural monument by Ehime Prefecture as property belonging to the Mt. Akashi copper mine.
Goyomatsu continue to grow wild in magnificent nature
The steep slopes of the Akashi Mountains are a virgin forest of trees of the original species of vast Goyomatsu along with Tsuga diversifolia, Enkianthus perulatus, and other varieties. Tens of thousands of native Goyomatsu trees have been growing for hundreds of years, and with their patterns, overhanging cliffs, stripped branches, and barkless trunks, it seems as though samples of all bonsai tree types have been gathered there.

It has been known by name since the Edo period, and bonsai society has greatly cherished these trees. From a very tiny crack in a towering cliff, a tree has been enduring the severe wind and snow and still maintains a noble form, evoking exquisite taste.
From a characteristic tree shape and nature to the royal road of bonsai
With its fine, short leaves and elegant tree shape, Akashi Goyomatsu is also known as "Hime Komatsu," which literally means "princess pine tree." While other pine trees generally have two leaves, Goyomatsu has five. It is a species native to Japan, and the largest trees can reach a height of 30 meters.

It is robust and can be trained in various ways. The tree begins to roughen and show its age on its trunk skin even when young. It sprouts very well. As noted, the tree's leaves are vividly green, with thick silver lines on the back of the leaves, and they grow with good density.

Because of its beautiful image, characteristics of growth, and ease of management, the tree has been considered to be an appropriate variety for bonsai and garden trees. It is a very popular species among pine bonsai trees, and it is an ideal tree for bonsai.

It is a unique variety with the real flavor of bonsai, to the extent that bonsai artists say that "Bonsai begins and ends with Goyomatsu."

If the majestic Kuromatsu, one of the representative types of pine, is the "King of Bonsai," then Goyomatsu, with its fine leaves and elegant appearance, is the "Queen of Bonsai."
