[Representative's message]
Seaweed is widely distributed as a traditional foodstuff in Japan, but can be said to be unchanged in terms of consumer spending patterns. This makes it hard to produce novel ideas. On the other hand, there is major room for development. We make proposals for functional ingredients of seaweed in different forms from this perspective. Seaweed is dried and processed into plate seaweed by primary industry enterprises, and is distributed under the joint sale system. Therefore, product development generally starts from plate seaweed. We jointly develop products with primary industry enterprises. This is in line with the Japanese fisheries administration aiming for the reinforcement of the fisheries industry. We therefore can be easily subsidized by the government, and can easily utilize information of the government. We have developed products with ideas that go beyond common sense. This includes anti-metabolic foods in which the dietary fibers of seaweed are used, and cosmetics utilizing the hygroscopicity of seaweed. We have also developed seaweed-fermented seasonings.

We have established a system for cooperating with primary industry enterprises and fisheries research institutes, but face issues in production and sales flows. Seaweed as a raw material is high in price, and takes a considerable time (about one year) for fermentation. We are striving to reduce the fermentation time and costs.

We exhibited products at the Japan International Seafood & Technology Expo in 2016, and gave a lecture. 
Our products were reported in The Japan Food Journal.
