Eiwa Co., Ltd.

We jointly developed a cobalt alloy targeting medical fields, which was done through industry/university/government cooperation.

Our company manufactures a high-value-added cobalt alloy as an Iwate brand product. It was originally developed under the guidance of the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University. Our company began mostly as an FRP molding manufacturer. We now deal with anti-corrosion products and other special products for water purification plants. We started our special metal business (e.g., melting, forging, and rolling) fairly recently. We are continuing R&D efforts to make this product more appealing as a biomaterial for medical applications, and also as a material for other industries.

[Product description] COBARION® high-value-added cobalt chrome alloy is a product developed by Professor Akihiko Chiba at the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University. The trademark COBARION® was registered by the Iwate Industry Promotion Center before our company commercialized this product. It has almost no Ni content, but our original crystalline structure control technology made it possible to add entirely new characteristics. These include high ductility and high workability, in addition to high mechanical strength and high wear and corrosion resistance. The materials are turned into an alloy by vacuum melting, and go through various thermal treatment processes to be supplied to customers in their final forms (round bars, plates). This alloy is suitable for artificial joints in orthopedics, and denture bases and orthodontic wire in dentistry. [Market share/Ranking] Our company is the only manufacturer of such a product. [Authorization/Certification] Acquired ISO 9001:2008 certification (April 15, 2014). [Intellectual property] CCW Manufacturing Method (Japanese Patent Application No. 2012-203683). [Major facilities and equipment] 100-kg melting furnace; 30-kg melting furnace; 300-kg heating furnace; 100-kg heating furnace; 600-ton press machine; 200-kg press machine; manipulator; fluorescence X-ray component analyzer; ultrasonic testing equipment; inverted metallurgical microscope; tension tester; Rockwell hardness tester.

[Product description] We use the special alloy manufacturing technologies we acquired through the development and commercialization of COBARION® to manufacture a wide range of special alloys. We can handle projects with small lots and quick deliveries that are difficult for major special alloy manufacturers to accommodate. We can make a prototype if you are interested in using cobalt alloy to create your product. Products/dimensions: Co-based alloy (COBARION® series). Copper alloy, Monel, Fe-based alloy, Ni-Co alloy. Functional alloy magnetic material (soft/semi-hard), Elinvar, Invar, and Super-Invar. Casting materials are vacuum melted in units of 15 to 100 kg to make ingots. Forging materials are rectangular columns or cylindrical columns from diameter 100 to 40 (based on consultation). Rolled stock for grooved rolling: Round bars (diameter 20 to 40). Plate rolling: Less than W120 × H5 to 30. If you have any concerns about the materials, please do not hesitate to consult us. [Authorization/Certification] Acquired ISO 9001:2008 certification (April 15, 2014). [Major facilities and equipment] 100-kg vacuum melting furnace; 30-kg vacuum melting furnace; 300-kg electric heating furnace; 100-kg electric heating furnace; 600-ton press machine; 200-kg press machine; manipulator; fluorescence X-ray component analyzer; ultrasonic testing equipment; inverted metallurgical microscope; tension tester; Rockwell hardness tester.
