PAPALAB Limited Company
Two-dimensional colorimeter enables discrimination of subtle color differences that up to now had relied on visual inspection
We manufacture color fidelity cameras and image processing devices that deliver accurate results more quickly than visual inspections. It's now possible to measure brightness and chromaticity with nearly the same precision as the human eye, rapidly measuring and quantifying the color data. It’s then possible to reproduce the colors on a monitor just as a person would see it. This means that color management tasks that have traditionally been conducted visually can now be handled quickly and easily.

[Company strength] We can handle all facets of color management for manufacturing, from input to output, on an integrated basis. Our in-house technological capabilities enable us to deal effectively with everything from software development to monitor display… even suggestions on filming environments, if needed. We deliver shorter turnaround and more accurate measurement, compared with visual inspection, and can respond flexibly to the needs of our customers, from software specs to monitor adjustments. We use accurately quantified color information and imaging that reproduces exactly what is seen to offer solutions to various issues surrounding the use of color. These include such things as difficulties in setting clear color and texture criteria, or sharing accurate color information. [Business description] We focus on the manufacture of color fidelity cameras and image processing devices, along with contract software development. Our primary product currently is a two-dimensional colorimeter that is cable of measuring brightness and chromaticity at a level of precision close to the sensitivity of the human eye. This was developed with the goal of breaking free from the need for visual inspections of color and texture. [Industry] Manufacturing [Strength of products/technologies] The monitor displays colors exactly as the human eye sees them, from flesh tones to metallic hues, and quickly measures and digitizes color data. Image and numerical data can be saved simultaneously, which is a great convenience in inspection recording. It is possible to discriminate subtle color differences and irregularities, as measurements are performed in real time and without contact. Color management tasks that previously have been conducted by visual inspection can now be handled simply and speedily, and with exceptional precision. Our goal is to accurately display and digitize colors that have not been able to be displayed or measured using traditional cameras or measurement devices. We also want to facilitate the differentiation of colors that have only been distinguishable through visual inspection. [Representative's message] Our main products today are two-dimensional colorimeters, which are being supplied to major cosmetics and automobile manufacturers. We are also looking to expand our penetration in medium sized manufacturers. Many Japanese manufacturers operate factories overseas, primarily in East and Southeast Asia. These companies and facilities, regardless of their size, do not have any definitive means of inspecting color and texture ? factors that relate deeply to their product design. We want to continue to develop our domestic sales channels, of course. But we also want to promote the benefits of introducing these inspection devices, using Internet communications technology, in overseas production facilities. [Company structure for market development/overseas expansion] Sales department staff posted in the Tokyo metropolitan area deals exclusively with large companies, to ensure such business is conducted smoothly. We also recruit international students and are establishing a structure to respond efficiently to inquiries from overseas, with the cooperation of Shizuoka University. [Market share/Ranking] 100% domestic market share in two-dimensional colorimeters [Awards and media coverage] [Commendations] Fiscal 2010 Shizuoka Prefecture Governor’s Award [Media Exposure] Nikkei Electronics, "Seizing Victory with Color Reality" (October 30, 2013); NHK Shizuoka Station News [Authorization/Certification] Patent No. 4371243, calibration method for imaging device and imaging device; Patent No. 5213781, imaging device [Joint research and development] Joint research in color fidelity imaging technology with the engineering faculty of Shizuoka University (2006 ? 2010); joint development of remote diagnostic systems with Panasonic System Solutions Japan Co., Ltd. (2010 ? present) [Transaction form] Orders for prototype development, OEM agreements, licensing agreements [Main Clients / Business History (domestic)] Cosmetics evaluation system for research facilities of cosmetics manufacturers, including P&G and Kosei (2010 ? own systems), paint evaluation system for Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (2013 ? own system), automotive parts manufacturers (2013 ? own systems), Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (2001 ? contract development), other image processing software development and the like [Main Clients / Business History (overseas)] Under consideration by Mizuno Corporation for use as an image examination system for internationally produced sporting wear, and installation at affiliated companies overseas [Exhibition History/Information] InterNEPCON 2013, Small and Medium Enterprise Zone; MEDICA 2010, 2011 (Germany), JETRO Japan Booth; three exhibits, including InterNEPCON, planned for 2014
