Tajima Light Metal Co., Ltd.

We are thoroughly committed to aluminum casting using sand molds in these changing times.

We are an aluminum casting company that makes use of globally rare manufacturing technologies. These include casting technology for products over two tons in weight, Japan's first casting technology using metal matrix composites (MMC), and low-pressure casting technology using sand molds. We mainly manufacture large aluminum parts over two tons in weight and highly rigid parts made of metal matrix composite. Our main production method is sand casting. Our metal casting technology for aluminum alloy containing 30% ceramics (silicon carbide powder) is the first of its kind in Japan. We have also established a casting technology for 40% compound materials (for the first time in the world) on consignment under the Strategic Core Technology Advancement Program. We have had many transactions with major domestic Japanese companies, such as Fanuc, NSK, Shimadzu, and Daihatsu Motor.

[Company strength]
Our company makes use of globally rare technologies for manufacturing. These include casting technology for products over two tons in weight, Japan's first casting technology using metal matrix composites (MMC), and low-pressure casting technology using sand molds. We meet a wide range of user needs from electronic product manufacturing equipment (for semiconductors and LCDs) to medical equipment (CT scanners and dental and medical equipment). We also supply products including machine tools, ships (patrol boat engines), automobiles (transmission parts and inspection jigs), and landscape items (monuments and external walls). Casting is said to be difficult to automate. We have a young staff with an average age of 32 (as of June 2015) working hard at Monozukuri craftsmanship with sweat dripping from their brows. We have a pattern shop on the grounds of our site, unlike other companies in the same business.

[Business description]
Our company is an aluminum casting manufacturer. We mainly manufacture large aluminum parts over two tons in weight and highly rigid parts made of metal matrix composite. Our main production method is sand casting. We also provide machining, thermal treatment, and sandblasting of aluminum products. We have an integrated production system for cast parts from materials arrangement to thermal treatment and machining. We meet various customer needs for quality, cost, and turnaround. We also manufacture and sell a patented electric reversing machine that enables a small number of people to safely turn (reverse) a heavy item by 360 degrees.

[Industry]
Manufacturing (nonferrous metal casting)

[Strength of products/technologies]
(1) We can manufacture aluminum castings over two tons in weight.
(2) Our metal casting technology for aluminum alloy containing 30% ceramics (silicon carbide powder) is the first of its kind in Japan. We have also established casting technology for 40% compound materials (for the first time in the world) on consignment under the Strategic Core Technology Advancement Program.
(3) Our company mass-produces automobile parts (transmission parts).
(4) Automotive inspection jigs enabling recycling are now under production and on sale.
(5) We have sold 120 units of reversing devices for heavy articles throughout Japan (six units are in service within the company).
(6) We have succeeded in employing the sand mold low-pressure casting method to manufacture 500-kg products made of a highly rigid alloy (MON3). This was jointly developed with an aluminum ground metal manufacturer.

[Representative's message]
In this age of kaleidoscopic changes we are thoroughly committed to aluminum casting using sand molds. We noted that in this context Monozukuri craftsmanship is all about crafting people, and we are now focusing on cultivating human resources. Our company started recruiting new graduates in 2001. Our staff has grown to more than 30 people, and they are in their early 30s on average. This young labor force is our greatest motive power. We are committed to cultivating human resources through various kinds of training, including OJT. However, there is no motive power stronger than their spirit of taking on the challenge of satisfying customers who expect higher quality. We will brush up our technical power and quickly meet customer needs. We are not powerful but will continue to contribute to society by carrying out casting that we can boast of to the world. We hope you will pay us a visit. All of our staff are looking forward to seeing you.

[Company structure for market development/overseas expansion]
In October 2015 we concluded a tentative contract with a local company after visiting companies in the same line of business (about 60 companies) in China for 20 years. We started training young staff, including successors. Our plan is to establish a joint venture in Huwanren Manju Beye Dasangga Siyan, Liaoning, China in three years and start production using aluminum casting. We have already conducted a market survey with the cooperation of Mitsui Bussan Metals, with regard to robots, medical equipment, and automobile inspection jigs. We will start trial manufacturing and export only difficult products from Japan. We will provide technical assistance for mass production of only products that can be manufactured locally. This is how we will focus on cultivating the aluminum casting market.

[Market share/Ranking]
The automotive industry accounts for more than about 90% of aluminum alloy casting (about 400,000 tons per year) in the domestic Japanese market. Therefore, leaving that out suggests that our market share is estimated to be about 1.5%.
