Katayama Steel Rule Die Inc.
Application of technology of steel-rule dies for paper containers to punching-out of materials other than paper
We entered the business in 1923, and have been manufacturing steel-rule dies for paper containers. Our customers are Japanese-affiliated major printing companies. Through decades of know-how and the results of joint research with Nagaoka University of Technology, we have applied punching-out processing to materials other than paper, such as films and laminated composite materials. We can suggest applications involving materials other than paper, regarding measuring equipment for shape measurement, bending strength measurement, etc. A press die called a steel-rule die is a suitable tool for two-dimensional consistent mass production. We are expanding our customer base by meeting both domestic and overseas needs.
Other presentation
[Company strength] We have developed modern facilities such as laser processing machines, a machining center, water-jet cutting machines, and automatic blade bending machines. Therefore, we can comprehensively provide steel-rule dies with good accuracy and jigs and peripheral equipment thereof, flexibly using suitable processing techniques for each material such as plywood, plastic, rubber, and metal. Our main products include metal dies/metal counters for which we have pursued accuracy and durability, and simple universal blanking tools at a low price. [Business description] We manufacture and sell steel-rule dies for printing paper containers, and related products. We also sell measuring instruments for quality control of packaging products. With our long track record in the printing paper container industry, we have been growing steadily, with printing paper container companies as our customers. We have continued to grow and develop dramatically since using laser beam processing technology for production for the first time in Japan. [Industry] Manufacture and sales of steel-rule dies for printing paper containers, and related products [Strength of products/technologies] Quality control of paper container packages is indispensable in order to provide steel-rule dies with high quality and accuracy, by steel-rule die manufacturing techniques having a history of 100 years, and related products, and to operate an automatic box-making/filling-up line for mass-produced products with high speed and efficiency. We have developed measuring machines optimal for the quality control of package products, and have put together a complete set of various kinds of machines. We will help to improve the quality and production of package products which are closely related to everyday life. [Representative's message] We have shown our products at domestic industrial exhibitions only to date, but now aim to show our products at overseas exhibitions and domestic exhibitions in other industries to expand our customer base. We are searching for possible relationships with companies in other industries. Our press dies, which are called steel-rule dies, are tools suitable for two-dimensional consistent mass production. We have produced the dies exclusively for printing paper container presses, but may expand their application to other industries. We have a range of measuring devices for managing the ruled line (fold) of paper containers. These instruments have general-purpose properties and can be used as measuring instruments for various objects by minor modification and customization. [Company structure for market development/overseas expansion] One person in charge at the business section deals with exhibitions, etc., in collaboration with one person in charge of manufacturing, R&D, to provide technical support. Four persons at the business section are working on expanding sales channels. Our English website has been launched for overseas development, and one staff member who can write English emails and speak some English is also permanently stationed. [Market share/Ranking] There are no more than five steel-rule die companies capable of producing metal dies/metal counters in Japan. We are proud to be ranked in the top three. [Awards and media coverage] [Awards] Gogi (splendid skill), 2012 (Nagaoka Activation Zone of Energy (NAZE), nonprofit corporation) [Media] The September 2013 issue of the Nagaoka City Newsletter, July 4, 2012 edition of The Nikkei, June edition of Hokugin Monthly published on June 14, and the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun dated May 21, 2012, and others [Authorization/Certification] Approved as Tokyo Metropolitan Business Innovation Plans (2007) [Joint research and development] From this year, we are starting to participate in overseas exhibitions, and domestic exhibitions in new fields to expand our customer base. We are searching for the possibility of working with companies in other fields. Our product, a press die called a steel-rule die, is suitable for two-dimensional consistent mass production. Currently, we produce these dies exclusively for printing paper container presses. Of course, the dies may be used for other materials as well as other industries. We also have a range of measuring instruments for managing the ruled lines (folds) of paper containers. These instruments have general-purpose properties and could be used as measuring instruments for various objects by minor modification and customization.
