Yamaguchi Kasei Co., Ltd.

Expanding business in and outside Japan with small precision products mainly made of polystyrene foam

We are a polystyrene foam manufacturer established in 1953. We are mainly manufacturing small precision products by using small molding machines. Since establishment, our company has been accumulating knowledge and experience about small precision products made of polystyrene foam. We were the first manufacturer in Japan to commercialize thermoplastic bead polyurethane foam products, and we have captured one third of the domestic market for marine floats made of polystyrene foam. We have supplied to many domestic companies such as Yamaha, Panasonic Ecology Systems, and Denso. We have experience in direct and indirect overseas exports and are also engaged in the manufacture and sales of paper cans.

Other presentation

[Company strength]
We consistently challenge and tackle new technologies and develop products in unique areas different from those of other companies. The market for polystyrene foam first grew for packaging materials and heat insulating materials. In the 1970s, we captured one third of the domestic market for marine floats made of polystyrene foam. We are dedicated to the manufacture of small articles and flexibly meet changing needs for products and small-lot production without being affected by the trends for heavy, thick, long, and large products. In 2000, we started manufacturing paper cans based on the common concept of “gently wrapping products for customers. The use of paper cans has expanded, and the cans are now used for nori (Japanese dried seaweed), tea and cakes.

[Business description]
In 1953, we started out by manufacturing elastic bands. Today, our main business is the manufacture and sale of polystyrene foam products, which we started in 1963 when polystyrene foam began to emerge. In 1985, we installed mold production facilities manufacture molds in-house. In 2000, we started manufacturing and selling paper cans. With polystyrene foam products as the core, we are expanding our business to package products.

Manufacture of polystyrene foam and paper can products

[Strength of products/technologies]
We are dedicated to the manufacture of small precision products, mainly small molding machines, in the niche market of polystyrene foam. We actively develop and supply products which are difficult for other companies to manufacture. We attend meetings from the stage of designing using 3D design technology, and can thus propose products that meet the customer’s needs while utilizing the characteristics of polystyrene foam. In 2002, we marketed our unique Chotto Eco Series, which is a utility model developed in combination with our paper can technology. We are also promoting the commercialization of thermoplastic bead polyurethane foam.

[Representative's message]
We commercialized Japan’s first thermoplastic bead polyurethane foam product by applying the technology of manufacturing small precision products from polystyrene foam. This was also the world’s first product manufactured without the involvement of a raw materials manufacturer. We will continue to lead the industry while considering other markets such as welfare, and will also consider overseas markets.

[Company structure for market development/overseas expansion]
President Matsukura and Technical Department Manager Michikura are in charge of technical consulting, and visit new customers directly. We conduct technical reviews quickly and make proposals that meet customers’ needs. For overseas business, we have established a system using our export experience.
