Shimizu Iron Works Co., Ltd.
Our company has five-face machining equipment and five-axis machining equipment, and is a key player in can manufacturing.
We are a group of Monozukuri craftsmanship experts based in Yao city, Osaka prefecture. We focus on short-time delivery, small lots, prototyping and development, and high-mix production. We have four sets of large-scale five-face machining equipment including portal simultaneous five-axis machining equipment of the largest class in West Japan. As a result, we are skilled at manufacturing large-sized parts of prototype products and specially-ordered products for shipbuilding, iron manufacturing apparatus, and nuclear facilities. We usually use our integrated system for performing everything in-house, including material preparation, welding and machining. We also have a network of partners for critical cases. Recently, we have started to perform welding and machining of highly alloyed materials such as duplex stainless steel, titanium and Inconel, and are expanding into the energy and aerospace industries.
Other presentation
[Company strength] Our core skills are welding and machining. We have TIG and CO2 welding machines, and 7 portal machining centers including five-face machining equipment. We have also introduced state-of-the-art five-axis machining equipment and a combined lathe. Our core technology is vacuum technology. In recent years, we have designed vacuum chambers by utilizing CAE in-house. We have excellent human resources for supporting these skills in our company, 91% of whom have passed national trade skill tests, from the third level to the special level. In recent years, we have entered the National Tournament of World Skills Competition in the structural ironworking and lathing disciplines. [Business description] Our company was established in 1933 as a small factory. We have an integrated system for performing everything in-house, including material preparation, welding and machining. We have a large-sized machining center with five-face machining equipment (which very few competitors have), and focus on manufacturing large-sized parts for industrial machines. We are currently investing heavily in order to be able to weld and machine highly alloyed materials such as duplex stainless steel, titanium and Inconel and shift our business to industries where there are very few competitors, such as energy, aerospace and resource development. [Industry] Metal part manufacturing [Strength of products/technologies] We have in-house capabilities to perform large-scale can manufacturing and large-scale machining so that we can smoothly discuss matters with customers under secure confidentiality and nondisclosure agreements. The representative of our company used to work for one of the largest special steel companies and learned manufacturing technology of special steel and metallurgical engineering. We are using that experience to respond to customers’ requirements such as the unprecedented development of welding and processing even for large parts that our competitors cannot achieve. We will continue to conduct research and development by employing the “Monozukuri Craftsmanship Subsidy”. [Representative's message] We have acquired ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications to enter new business fields (energy, aerospace and resource development). Our top representative conducts sales activities, as he is a master of can manufacturing and machining, so we have built up enormous trust among more than 50 client companies in our ability to manufacture large-sized parts of trial devices and specially-ordered products. We have adapted our operations to market trends and customer needs, and will continue to invest in capital and R&D to improve customer satisfaction. [Company structure for market development/overseas expansion] We do business with major companies in existing businesses such as large-sized can manufacturing and large-sized five-face machining. However, we are now investing capital to develop new businesses such as welding of special steels (titanium, Inconel, Hastelloy, etc.) and combined machining, as growth industries in the future. Accordingly, we are fostering human resources and continuing research and development by employing the “Monozukuri Craftsmanship Subsidy” in advance. We will continue to focus on domestic manufacturing even amid orders from abroad, and will differentiate ourselves from other companies in high-value-added business areas. [Market share/Ranking] We do not consider our share or ranking, for we receive orders for small lot sizes with short delivery times, from more than 50 clients. [Awards and media coverage] [Award] 2014 Excellent Company Award for Monozukuri Craftsmanship in Osaka [Media] [Authorization/Certification] ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications “Productivity enhancing facilities Type B” in Management Innovation Program under the Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Act [Main Clients / Business History (domestic)] Daido Steel (under confidentiality agreement), Kawasaki Heavy Industries (prototype parts for jet engines), Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (mounting frames of main and auxiliary equipment), Hitachi Zosen (mounting frames of main and auxiliary equipment), Sharp (parts for liquid crystal production equipment), Panasonic (parts for liquid crystal production equipment), and many others
