Hirose Paper Mfg. Co., Ltd.

Manufacture of wet unwoven fabrics for cell separators, etc.

We manufacture and sell wet unwoven fabrics (functional paper). We manufacture alkaline manganese cells, lithium ion (secondary) cell separators, water treatment membrane support media, air filters, printing paper, etc. We have inherited the approach since the time of our foundation, when we developed Japan’s first functional paper made of 100% synthetic fiber by applying Japanese papermaking techniques. We can produce paper using a single material such as 100% vinylon, and thus can produce functional paper utilizing characteristics of the material. We also produce the world’s lightest 100% synthetic-fiber unwoven fabrics by dispersing fibers in water. Our alkaline manganese cell separators have a 60% share in Japan and 30% overseas.

[Company strength]
We can check procedures for new fibers and compositions by hand-making (hand testing) A4 size. We can then produce a small-rod roll sample for evaluating basic conditions and papermaking using a small amount of raw materials and a small papermaking machine (papermaking width of 800 mm).
We built a new factory with a papermaking machine having the maximum capacity of 100 t/month/machine or more in February 2014, in addition to a machine (production of 50 t/month/machine) for producing various products in small amounts. We can therefore produce any amount as required.

[Business description]
We manufacture and sell wet nonwoven fabrics (functional paper). We manufacture primary (alkaline manganese) cell separators, secondary (lithium ion) cell separators, water treatment membrane support media (for seawater desalinization, industrial waste water, household clean water, etc.), air filters, printing paper (calendars, race numbers for marathons, name cars, etc.), and food packaging materials (for sponge cakes, cream puffs, pies, etc.). We perform hot calendaring, painting (photogravure and knife), and nanofiber spraying by an original electrospinning method.

[Strength of products/technologies]
We have inherited the approach since the time of our foundation, when we developed Japan’s first functional paper made of 100% synthetic fiber by applying Japanese papermaking techniques. (1) We can make paper using a single material (100% vinylon, polyester, polyolefin and PPS), and thus can produce functional paper with the characteristics of the material used. (2) We can produce the world’s lightest 100% synthetic-fiber unwoven fabrics (2 g/m) by uniformly dispersing fibers in water. We are also actively working on new development, and have dramatically increased the production of nanofibers, which used to be difficult, by our recently developed electrospinning method. We can thus produce functional paper having ultrafine hole diameters.

[Representative's message]
To avoid the conventional dependency on trading companies and obtain information by ourselves, we actively carry out development and have increased our overseas sales ratio to 60% or more. To do this, we quadrupled the number of staff in the marketing division and development division in two years, and are now shifting from providing products to providing solutions. We actively distribute information overseas and gather information through Japanese experts (water-treatment membranes and pulps) who are permanently stationed in the U.S.A.

[Company structure for market development/overseas expansion]
We have set up two main divisions: one for collecting information on the needs of customers and the market, which is mainly handled by the general sales group, and the other division for conducting work ranging from process to product development, which is mainly handled by the technical sales group. We actively hire mid-career staff with experience in companies and researchers in universities to add to our knowledge and experience.
Overseas sales account for 60-70%, so we actively hire English-speaking international staff who have experience of working overseas.
