Hakuryuan Katsuyama Co., Ltd.

We are expanding Kyoto Tsumekaki Hon Tsuzure-ori textile craftsmanship to the interior and construction industries.

We manufacture Tsumekaki Hon Tsuzure-ori textile products that make full use of this special weaving technique. The weaving is performed using human fingernails and combs in interweaving the pattern without using any powered machines at all. Fine, lightweight, flexible, and unconventional textiles can be woven using ultra-fine thread in our original Tsumekaki Hon Tsuzure-ori textiles. We can manufacture products using two kinds of weaving, including the conventional method. We are also developing new products to be applicable to other areas such as the interior and construction industries.

[Company strength]
We are the only company that manufactures two types of Tsumekaki Hon Tsuzure-ori textiles, which is done entirely in Japan (Kyoto). We offer both new-style Tsumekaki Hon Tsuzure-ori textiles, which bear our original characteristics of a fine, light, and flexible structure, and conventional Tsumekaki Hon Tsuzure-ori textiles. The aging of owners and craftsmen has become a problem these days in traditional industries. However, our company president is in his forties. He is taking on the challenge of the kimono industry as well as new areas (such as interior articles). He is also developing young craftsmen as successors to the technology in the next generation. Young craftsmen in their thirties play an active role in our company.

[Industry]
Tsumekaki Hon Tsuzure-ori textile manufacturing, wholesaling, and retailing

[Strength of products/technologies]
We manufacture products manually, one by one, without using power machines and jacquard cards. Mass production is not appropriate for our company. However, we can support unique custom-made manufacturing. Each of our company’s products is the only one of its kind in the world. We are the only company that manufactures our original Tsumekaki Hon Tsuzure-ori textiles making use of our original thread and weaving technique.

[Representative's message]
Our company has been focusing on Tsuzure-ori textiles since the previous generation. We hope to expand our business to the kimonos and also to products in other areas in order to transfer the technology created by our predecessors to the next generation. We hope to expand our unique technology overseas in addition to the domestic market. We started by creating interior illumination. We hope to make this illumination equipment pave the way for our expansion to the Europe and U.S.A.

[Company structure for market development/overseas expansion]
We are a small family business, so our president and managing director will be the direct points of contact for manufacturing and transactions. This fiscal year we started joint development of new products in areas such as interior articles and construction, which we had not been involved in before. We are targeting the world’s wealthy classes with an interest in Japanese culture as well as domestic customers. Our joint development partner is a designer who has experience participating in domestic and overseas exhibitions as well as sales experience. We are also preparing a website in English and brochures.

[Market share/Ranking]
We are the only manufacturer of new-style Tsumekaki Hon Tsuzure-ori textiles.
