Minimum functional elements commonly used for various machines are called machine elements. These elements are gears, shafts, bearings, and springs, as well as nuts and bolts, and other screw parts. They are indispensable parts that play an important role when they are incorporated into machines. Many of their specifications are provided in international standards and in the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). JIS defines a bolt as a generic term for all male parts used with nuts, while nut is defined as a generic term for the female parts used with bolts. JIS defines a machine screw as a screw with a head diameter about double the outside diameter. The definition also specifies that it is basically fastened by applying torque to a slotted or cross-recessed head with a screwdriver.
