With tactile sensors that measure “tactile sensations”, we aim to achieve sensitivity similar to that of human fingertips.
We are developing technology for tactile sensors. We are developing, doing application research and commercializing a “piezo wire sensor”, which is formed by winding piezo film around a core wire to make an ultra-fine coaxial cable with a diameter of 0.5 mm. It is thin and supple, and does not require a power source because it generates power itself, so it is easy to install and can detect movement and vibration of objects by covering local areas and wide areas as well. It enables mass production with low cost and can detect abnormal vibration caused by wear of not only rotating mechanisms such as bearings and drill bits, but also sliding mechanisms, so it is expected to be applied to useful life diagnosis of factory machines.

While it is possible to easily acquire and record data on the movement path of worker’s hands and fingers, it is fairly difficult to measure tactile data sensed by the fingertips. If it was possible to make a fingertip tactile sensor, there are high expectations that it would be possible to use tactile sensations of dust on coated surfaces and roughness on welded parts in order to improve manufacturing processes, grip flexible objects and parts with irregular shapes, and be applied to production lines for purposes of mobility, etc. Similarly, it will be possible to detect minute changes in vibration during processing due to deterioration or expiration of blades and bearing, which can lead to roughening of processing surfaces and reduced processing precision in processing machines. Wire vibration sensors are thin and flexible, so they can be installed afterwards on existing manufacturing equipment and machinery, making it possible to more accurately determine when to replace blades and prevent defects from occurring. We aim to realize such tactile control in robot hands and realize collaboration with various sensing technologies and robot control technologies.
Medical / long-term care
As we enter a chronic labor shortage for medical and long-term care, the demand is rising for equipment that assists and supplements such labor. At Robosensor Technology Research, in order to meet demand for equipment to monitor patients and long-term care recipients and supervise activity timing, we develop long-term care bed sheets and rehabilitation equipment using cloth-like tactile sensors. These cloth-like sensors are flexible and breathable, and can also be cut and sewn, so they can be made with a large surface area at a low price.
We are also considering application of glove-type tactile devices, for adults and children with disabilities, who do not have adequate means of communication with the outside, and have limited opportunities for education and access to various information. It can read coordinates of text traced on the palm of the user’s hand and convert it to text data and then into speech, for use as a conversation support device. Internet of Things technology enables communication with remote areas, so the range of conversation and communication is expanded overseas, and the effects of this are tremendous. By applying it to a collar or vest as a pet activity monitor or sleep monitor, and linking it to internet service via a smartphone, you can monitor the state of your pet while you are not at home. By incorporating advanced analysis methods such as AI so that people can read emotions of pets precisely, it is possible to shorten the gap between humans and pets.
